Processing of Plastic Waste at Hamburger Recycling Hungary

HR Hungary shows a growing trend in the quantitative processing of plastics in addition to paper.

Out of four sites, such processing activity takes place in Budapest and Lőrinci.

The materials arriving at the Lőrinci site are pre-treated before grinding:

  • inappropriate contaminants are sorted from the materials
  • in some cases, cutting the materials into smaller pieces that can be handled by the machine is required
  • and homogeneous materials are sorted by color (single-color material is more valuable, it is easier to sell).

A key issue for customer confidence is the purity of the grinded material, which is provided by paying special attention to the following:

  • thorough cleaning of the grinding machine after different material grades
  • feeding the grinded material into brand new, clean bags (weighing 1.000 or 1.200 kg according to customer requirements)
  • storage on durable, load-bearing wooden pallets.

In most cases, customers are not required to produce regranulate from the high-quality, clean grinded materials, so they can use them immediately in their manufacturing processes.

The following types of plastics are grinded at the Lőrinci site:

  • ABS
  • HDPE
  • PA, PC, PE, PP, PS.

The amount of grinded plastics produced and delivered is becoming more dominant every year: in 2020, it exceeded 270 tons.

At the Budapest site, pure, white EPS from packaging is processed (EPP also in smaller quantities).

As the utilization of EPS waste is still at an early stage in Hungary, it is of great help to the supplier partners that the company also provides the opportunity to take over industrial quantities at its sites.

However, supplying EPS of low specific weight with an own fleet should be re-considered for cost-effectiveness reasons, as 1 truckload of bulk EPS becomes only about 1 pallet of compacted material after processing.

In all cases, EPS waste is pre-sorted by color and quality in the Budapest processing facility for later use. The sorted or already selectively delivered waste is melted and then compacted by pressing, using suitable special purpose machines. As a hard crust is formed on the solid briquette’s external surface if heated, its compactness also increases, and its storage and transport becomes more favorable.

The secured blocks laid on pallets, prepared for truck height are stored separately and then handed over to plastics companies (as a secondary raw material) for further processing in the plastics industry. Its largest foreign user uses it to manufacture building insulation materials.

In 2020 the processed amount of EPS waste evolved very positive: the quantity of delivery in the first half-year was doubled in the second half.

Moreover, the company also engages in trading activities with EPS: among other things, it resells amorphous production waste from Samsung’s factory in bundles.
